There are triggers in place to prevent werlac from simply owning melenis.

A strange thing happens,however,every time I break my alliance with him and commence a battle with him: At the very next turn I lose the campaign (game). At the ending I felt somehow I missed out on the really good ending even though I destroyed Melina but kept an alliance with Werlac.I went back to an earlier save and commenced to break my alliance with Werlac.I had more than enough soldiers+warfare experience to defeat him. At the end of Eternal Lords I have a question.Earlier, I told Werlac I would help him but only to destroy Melina.
